Speech on Jawaharlal Nehru – 2
"Good Morning Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Colleagues and My Dear Students!
Today, we have gathered here on the eve of Children’s Day and of course to give our students some special treatment, which they truly deserve. The management committee has decided to not conduct any classes today and let all the children enjoy the events and various other attractions especially organized for them.
We all know that Children’s Day is celebrated on 14th November every year. But how many of you know the importance of this day? Why only this date has been chosen for the celebration? Well, I could see some of the puzzled faces of our children, so let me tell you that this date is the birth anniversary of our great Indian statesman and first Indian Prime Minister, i.e. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and is celebrated nationwide as Children’s Day due to his extreme love and affection for children. Despite embroiled in the freedom struggle of India, he never failed to devote his time for the care of children as he found their innocence benign and uplifting. In other words, children were the epitome of innocence, love and care for Chacha Nehru.
As a political figure, Jawaharlal Nehru proved his mettle too and gave to the nation its special vehicle in the form of economic reform policy, i.e. Planning Commission of India. The Planning Commission of India was the creation of Jawaharlal Nehru. Under Planning Commission, the government of India formulates ‘Five-Year Plans’ in order to run the economy. The commission also facilitates a host of various other economic reforms. The first Five-Year Plan was laid down by Nehru himself on December 8th, 1951.
This was just the beginning of his undertaking as Jawaharlal Nehru then went on to become the first policymaker of India to realize the value of cottage industries in the Indian economic set up. His acute observation led to the growth of small scale industries which instilled much required production efficacy into the rural economy of India. In turn, the cottage industrial sector backed the agricultural workers for developing a better standard of living for themselves. This is owing to the additional income generated by the farmers.
Besides political and economic sphere, his contribution in the educational sector cannot be overlooked as he acted as a catalyst for change in the Indian society and was responsible in setting up Indian institutes for higher learning, such as we have the world renowned the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), including different other branches of Indian Institutes of Management (IIM). Basic level of education was made mandatory and free of cost. Adult educational institutes were also set up.
As he himself was an educated man, he knew the importance of education and how it can change the face of our country if every Indian citizen would learn how to read and write. The marks of his successful social, political and economic reforms are evident throughout the contemporary Indian Republic and the ever growing economy of our country underlines this very fact.
Children, I hope you all must have enjoyed listening to the achievements of Chacha Nehru as much as I enjoyed talking about him. On this note, I bring an end to my speech and request our hon’ble Principal to say a few words and begin the events thereafter.
Thank You!
"
