I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of the Lord and do what is right and just. Then I will do for him all that I have promised."

This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

"Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God will give you.

He passed in front of Moses and said, "I am the Lord, I am the Lord, the merciful and gracious God. I am slow to anger and rich in unfailing love and faithfulness.

But Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid. Just stand where you are and watch the Lord rescue you. The Egyptians that you see today will never be seen again.

'May the Lord bless you and protect you.

And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today.

And you saw how the Lord your God cared for you again and again here in the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child. Now he has brought you to this place.'

"But I said to you, 'Don't be afraid!

"But watch out! Be very careful never to forget what you have seen the Lord do for you. Do not let these things escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren.
